Evanston: an odd day
Evanston: an odd day
Yesterday began with a twinge in my left foot at 2:00 a.m. Last week I submitted to my semi-annual whittling. Four small bits of skin were removed and sent away for biopsy to determine if Apollo will kill me before Poseidon. One of these came from my left foot and was the source of the twinge. This was not painful, but reoccurred often enough to keep me awake. I gave up and got up at 3:00.
I spent the day watching Australian Open tennis and trying to do a couple of computer things. They did not go well probably because I was tired and certainly because all the support information I could find on the Internet was wrong. Eventually in late afternoon I solved one problem and gave up on the other.
What had been a long and tedious day was transformed at 5:00 p.m. when I opened a bottle of Laphroaig, an unexpected and welcomed gift from a visiting sailor from Boston. By the time Carol came home with pizza an hour later I was in a fine mood.
We had pizza and a movie--the excellent A ROOM WITH A VIEW. Both of us had seen it before, and enjoyed it even more this time. Set in Florence, Italy, and an English country house at the beginning of last century, it is a story of repressed sexuality. The key line is, “How can she play Beethoven so passionately and live as she does.” Despite there being no sex and little flesh--and that male--this was the first big commercial success for Merchant/Ivory.
When we went to bed early I did not notice that the knife used to cut the pizza was in the sink. I slept well and got up as usual while it was still dark. The above photo is what I saw when I went into the kitchen . It seems an appropriate image for an odd day.
