Evanston: boats, mostly
Evanston: boats, mostly
I’ve become restless and finally realized that it is because it has been too long since I’ve been on the boat. Almost two months to go. So I settle for a very small schooner sailing a green granite sea.

The America’s Cup has become interesting. One thing I had not expected was that the Arab Kiwis would outsail the more experienced Swiss Kiwis; but they have two races in a row. Today’s race was the best AC race in a long time, with both crews making mistakes in light wind and several lead changes. I don’t recall the last time the slower boat won the Cup, but it could happen.

Last week I watched the College World Series.
The unevenness of ability on college teams makes their competitions interesting and sympathetic.
With all of the attention lavished on a few stars, we tend to forget that every athlete who makes it into the big leagues possess exceptional ability. But even the best college teams have only a few outstanding athletes, some good ones, and some who are rather ordinary. You see a great play--a runner thrown out at home plate from the outfield--followed by a pitcher throwing a ball over the first baseman’s head on a routine ground ball.
The same two teams--Oregon State and North Carolina--played in the best two out of three final this year as last, and Oregon State won again.

I decided to buy Thomas Kelly’s two earlier books. PAYBACK and THE RACKETS. I found them used at Amazon for $0.01 each, plus $3.99 shipping.
One cent each.
Who would be an author?
But then what matters is not what you do for money but for passion.
