Evanston: storms
Evanston: storms
Snow has ended here just after noon and the sun has come out. The most recent total I have seen is 20.2 inches, making this the third biggest storm in Chicago’s history. Streets have not yet been plowed. Only a few trains are running. Airports are closed. The city is quiet.
Snow that isn’t removed in the next few hours is going to freeze solid as temperature drop to below 0ºF tonight.
But for my eyes--my left was operated on Monday, with initially less dramatic results than I had hoped--we would bundle up and try to trudge down to the lake.
That the city has come to a standstill today is to be expected. Whether life will resume something like normalcy tomorrow will be interesting.
On the other side of the world, a much more serious storm, Cyclone Yasi, has hit the Queensland coast near Cairns as a Category 5, with winds gusting over 300 kph/186 mph. The area of impact is north of that part of Queensland flooded last month. The death and destruction from this storm, which is being called the worst in living memory, are not yet known.
