Evanston: GANNETED
Evanston: GANNETED
Yesterday I made an offer on GROWLER, Moore 24 #40; and today it was accepted. I’m a bit excited, but excitement is tempered by frozen lakes.
In considering this boat, I realized that I have never sailed a boat before I bought her. However, this is the first boat I have bought without even seeing. The deal is contingent upon my inspection, which won’t take place for five months. I’ll see New Zealand gannets before I see this one. (The ‘gannet’ reference is explained here.)
I have decided that there are too many imponderables to sail her here, so she will be trailered down about May 1.
She is another 70s boat.
My first two boats were bought new and built in the 60s. EGREGIOUS was built in 1973. CHIDIOCK TICHBORNE 1978. RESURGAM either ‘76 or ‘77. And THE HAWKE OF TUONELA ‘76. The future GANNET 1979,
Her dimensions are: LOA 23’ 9”; LWL 21’ 9”; beam 7’2”; draft 4’; displacement 2050 pounds; ballast 1025 pounds. Bigger than CHIDIOCK TICHBORNE, but a small boat.
This photo provides human scale.
Moore 24s are one of the first of the ultra light displacement boats, and so will be a new experience for me. I’m looking forward to that.
